Costin’s practice is both contemporary and firmly rooted in traditional artistic methods. He began his artistic training at an early age, gaining admission at fifteen to the prestigious N. Tonitza Art High School. He later graduated first in his class, Magna Cum Laude, from the National University of Arts in Bucharest (UNARTE) in 1999 and completed a Master of Fine Arts at the same institution. His work is grounded in rigorous academic craftsmanship, with figurative drawing forming the structural core of his practice. Costin frequently incorporates abstract geometric volumes and color, often employing innovative materials such as epoxy resin. These elements interact with his monochromatic drawings, at times rupturing the surface or extending it into unexpected sculptural installations. His work explores themes of germination, entropy, mechanical rupture, and a cosmological architecture of the human condition within a multidimensional space. While intrinsically contemporary and expressionist, his works are sometimes mistaken for realism due to their methodical aspect. Closer engagement reveals an abstract visual language that invites viewers into a contemplative journey through shared fundamental geometries found in everything from seeds, human figures, to cosmic formations. By juxtaposing biological, geological, and human forms with the standardized aesthetics of modern technology, Costin challenges perceptual conventions and invites viewers to rediscover a common and hidden archetypal field of correspondence. His work encourages reflection on humanity’s impact on the environment and the interdependence of living systems, offering a compelling meditation on balance, continuity, and the interconnected nature of existence.
